Fidel Castro’s Career in Pro Baseball-Revolution or Home Run?

December 5th, 2010
Glen Eastman asked:

This is a story that falls into the category of “urban legend”. The story is that Fidel Castro was given a chance to join a major league baseball team in 1949 and didn’t. The story is based on a widely spread rumor and leads armchair historians to say “What if…”

Here is the story:

Castro had a try-out with a major league baseball team, either the New York Yankees or the Washington Senators, and was rejected.

How would the 20th century have been different if Castro had become a ballplayer in the US instead of the dictator of Cuba? Well, there’s no use in thinking about it, because the chance never existed. The story is completely false.

It was just a rumor that was blown out of proportion, but one reason why it was so appealing is that American major league baseball teams were actively scouting Cuba for players in the 1940′s. Also, US baseball teams have more Cuban players than any other foreign players, with the exception of the Dominican Republic.

Finally, it would have been convenient for Fidel Castro’s detractors to believe that he might have given up his entire revolution and ideology to toss a baseball in America for lots and lots of money. If this were true, it would damage the credibility of his cause. Maybe lots of people wanted to believe it.

It’s also interesting to note the two teams that are usually used in the story: The “Yankees”, (maybe because they rejected him, he spent the next 48 years going on tirades against them) and the “Senators”, the pro baseball team of the nation’s capital.

People and FACTS Magazine just released very interesting publication named The World’s Biggest Fidel Castro FACTS Collection at http://www.FidelCastroFacts.com
Among the hundreds of other little known facts – there are few that describe Fidel Castro’s never materialized pro baseball career.

So, here’s the truth:

Castro played for the University of Havana. Scouts from the Pittsburgh Pirates considered offering Castro a deal. They were in Havana looking for players and noticed Castro because of his curve ball. Pittsburgh Pirate Don Hoak played against Castro and told about it the rest of his life. He said that Castro threw such a great inside fastball that Hoak asked the referees to remove him from the game. The Pirates scouts, however didn’t see the same potential. They felt that he was not fast enough and not worth signing.

Castro claims that the Giants offered him $5,000 in the form of college aid and he refused it. It is impossible to verify this story, as different sources give slightly different details and none of them can be verified. However, Castro has always exploited the story for his benefit, saying that he turned down the offer from the American capitalists because he put his country first. Many Cuban players have followed in his footsteps, although many more have fled the country in order to play in the American major leagues.

Castro not only played baseball in his university days, he has been a die-hard baseball fan all his life. He asked Joe DiMaggio for an autographed baseball from him, and DiMaggio agreed to give him one, hoping it would help thaw out US-Cuba relations.

The fact that so many Cuban baseball players flee the country is a thorn in the dictator’s side. Stories of the players’ daring escapes from Cuba are told every time they are talked about, and it is a source of humiliation for Castro. These players are seen as bad examples for other Cuban kids who want to play baseball, and the images of America and baseball can’t be easily disentangled.

It is not true that the Yankees, Giants or Senators offered Castro a bonus to play for them, but it is quite likely that scouts for the Pirates were considering him. Still, considering his commitment to the cause of Cuba, it’s highly doubtful that he would have ditched it to go and play baseball in the United States. But, like all urban legends and rumors, a good story is a good story.

Classification of Depth of Burn Injury

December 2nd, 2010
Michael Morales asked:

Burns are classified by the depth of tissue affected. The depth of dermis lost is due to the degree of temperature of the burn and duration of exposure to the offending source. These burns are classified as:

1. First-degree burns are limited to the epidermal skin layer. These burns are erythematous, blanch with light pressure, and are often minimally to quite painful. Vesicles/blisters do not develop. Tissue damage and edema are minimal and most of the skin’s function is still intact. Given enough time, most heal spontaneously. Systemic effects from this type of burn are rare. Scarring is rare, but they do often peel (Merck, 2005; Oxbridge, 2008; Wikipedia, 2008).

2. Partial thickness or second-degree burns involve part of the dermis and are characterized as superficial and deep.

Superficial partial-thickness burn injuries involve the first half of the dermis. These burns usually heal in 2 to 3 weeks and rarely scar unless infection sets in. Healing for these burns occurs from the epidermal cells which line sweat gland ducts and hair. They grow to the surface and migrate across (divide) until they “meet” cells from neighboring sites. These burns blanch with pressure and are also painful. Vesicles/blisters develop within 24 hours. The vesicle bases are pink and develop a fibrinous exudate (Merck, 2005).
Deep partial-thickness burns involve the second or lower half of the dermis. These burns take greater than 3 weeks to heal. Healing of these burns occurs from the hair follicles and scarring is common. These burns may be white, red, or mottled red/white. These burns do not blanch and are less painful than the more superficial burns due to extensive nerve damage. Localization of a pinprick is more difficult after this injury. Blisters may develop, but these burns are often dry (as destruction of the sweat glands occurs). Skin grafting may be necessary. Careful dressing and avoiding infection help prevent progression to a full-thickness injury (Merck, 2005; Oxbridge, 2008; Cunha, et al., 2007). These burns are often ambiguous and will either spontaneously heal or evolve into a full-thickness burn (Gravante, et al, 2006).

3. Full-thickness burns also called third-degree burns extend through the entire dermis and project into the underlying fat (subcutaneous) layer. Healing occurs only from the peripheral layers and these burn injuries require skin grafting unless the area of burn is relatively small. These burns may be white and pliable, black and charred, brown and leathery, or bright red due to fixed hemoglobin in the subdermal region. Full-thickness burns that are white in color may resemble skin, but will not blanch when pressure is administered. These burns are usually not or are minimally painful. Blisters do not often develop. It may take days to be able to determine the differences between full thickness and deep partial-thickness burns (Merck, 2005). Hair follicles and sweat glands may be lost if the dermis is completely destroyed (Wikipedia, 2008).

4. Full-thickness burns may also be classified as fourth-degree burns if they involve destruction of the entire dermis and involves the deep tissues and bone. The skin is tough and leathery and sometimes has charring. They can be white, brown, or black in appearance. These burns are painless and heal with heavy scarring and granulation. Skin grafting is mandatory. One potential complication of this type of injury is compartment syndrome due to excessive swelling (Oxbridge, 2008; Wikipedia, 2008).

DUI and MADD

December 1st, 2010
Tim H asked:

MADD was founded by Candy Lightner in 1980 after the death of her 13 year old daughter by a repeat DUI offender. She organized the group to combat the problem of drunk driving.

MADD’s initial mission was to stop DUI and/or drunk driving from occurring (prevention), support the victims, and prevent underage drinking; which they did a tremendous job at. MADD successfully made our nations highways a bit safer by targeting repeat DUI offenders and chronic alcohol abusers who insisted on driving regardless of the consequences.

After a few years MADD became one of the most powerful political action/advocacy groups in America and got the attention of the United States. The money soon followed from the federal government and the organization grew into a huge lobbying and political platform. The agenda and mission of MADD soon began to change as the money and power took over.

In the year 1985, just 5 years after founding the organization MADD, the founder Candy Lightner left the organization criticizing the group for becoming a “neo-prohibitionist” organization targeting alcohol rather than the problem of drunk driving. The new mission of MADD had grown into being an ever-increasing hard line stance against the consumption of alcohol regardless of whether or not it had anything to do with driving.

Ever since then MADD has gone on to legislate against alcohol and has consistently pushed for prohibitionist actions rather than concentrating on the problem of drunk driving. There has been much to say about the MADD’s influence on the federal government and the dollars that flow between the two. MADD is a huge financial and political powerhouse with a lot of ‘pull’ on criminal law statutes throughout the nation.

Overall the organization has done a lot of good for our nations highways but they have also certainly changed goals over the years. Some say the current mission of MADD is not serving the people of the United States or making our nations roadways safer but merely creating revenue and political careers.

Democratic Party’s Position On Major Issues In Elections 2008

December 1st, 2010
Eric Schultz asked:

The Democratic Party is looking to regain the White House after eight years. Whether they succeed or not will depend on their stated positions on major issued affecting the lives of all Americans. If a majority of the electorates views match the Democratic candidate’s own opinions, the chances of occupying the White House are bright. So what is the Democratic Party’s stand on major issues. Here they are.

1. Economic Issues:

Democrats favor a higher minimum wage and more regular increases in order to assist the working poor. Democrats have opposed tax cuts and incentives to oil companies, favoring a policy of developing domestic renewable energy. Democrats believe that they always provide a balanced budget. They are in favor of higher taxes on the rich and businesses and better control on government spending to keep budget deficit under control. Democrats favor affordable and quality health care and more government intervention in this area. Democrats will strengthen environmental protection laws and impose stringent sanctions on polluters. Democrats aim to provide low-cost publicly funded college education with low tuition fees and increase availability of grants and scholarships. Democratic Party is in support of a progressive tax structure and has vowed to adjust the Alternate Minimum Tax (AMT) to give permanent AMT relief for those tax payers who were never meant to pay it.
2. Social Issues:
Democratic Party supports equal opportunity for all Americans and favors affirmative action as a way to redress past discrimination. Democratic believes that discrimination against persons because of their sexual orientation is wrong, support adoption rights for same-sex couples and opposes the military’s “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” policy. Democratic Party supports easy access to women for birth control and public funding of contraception for poor women. Democratic Party strongly supports all stem cell research.

3. Foreign Policy Issues:
Democrats believe in use of military force against those responsible for attacks against the United States and a majority voted for invasion of Afghanistan, while being divided (29 for and 21 against) on attacking Iraq. Democrats usually oppose the doctrine of unilateralism and believe that the United States should act in the international arena through strong alliances and international support.

4. Legal Issues:
Democrats oppose the use of torture as an instrument of interrogation of military prisoners. Democratic Party supports the right to individual privacy and supports legal restrictions on monitoring by law enforcement agencies. Democrats believe in preventive methods of crime control and emphasize improved community policing. Democratic Party favors gun control measures and introduced Gun Control Act of 1968, the Brady Bill of 1993 and Crime Control Act of 1994.

Now you know the Democrats position on various issues of national importance affecting the common citizen’s life. Did that help you make-up your mind? Hope so.

The Castros-Inside Fidel Castro’s Family

November 29th, 2010
Glen Eastman asked:

As beloved and famous as Fidel Castro is among Cuban people, no one knows anything at all about his personal life. In the Cuban media, there is hardly ever any mention of his wife, who he has been married to for more than 30 years, or their 5 sons.

In October 2000, The Miami Herald ran a photo of his sons Alejandro and Antonio, and reported that it was the first known published photograph of them. The Cuban media is heavily censored, and few publications outside of Cuba have ever been able to get ahold of pictures of the dictator’s family.

Castro’s wife, Dalia Soto Del Valle, and his 5 sons, Alejandro, Alex, Alexis, Angel and Antonio, are not involved in politics at all. They live better than most Cubans, but not extravagantly. Castro has them stay out of the public eye, and avoid any scandalous or attention-drawing behavior.

Castro has always been careful to keep his private life out of public scrutiny. He has never been one to talk about his background or personal life. The Cuban media is banned from reporting anything about his family or private affairs. On the 40-year anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, a 75-minute documentary about the leader was shown on Cuban television, and its mention of his children was the first for many Cubans.

Fidel Castro’s reason for keeping his private life secret is a sensible one. He claims that over 600 attempts have been made on his life, and therefore he must be careful. While this is a good point, to many, Castro seems to simply be a very private man who prefers not to mix personal and political matters. In a recent documentary, he said that keeping his private life out of the public eye allows him a certain amount of freedom that he could otherwise not enjoy.

Dalia Soto Del Valle met Castro in the 1960′s during his campaign to increase literacy. At that time she was a schoolteacher. After they married and settled down, she became a housewife, attending to her duties at home and rarely making any public appearances.

Their children use her surname, Soto Del Valle, in order to not attract attention to themselves. They all range from mid-20′s to mid-30′s and have ordinary jobs. Angel, the youngest, studies medicine and Antonio is in med school studying orthopedic surgery. The other three brothers work in the computer industry. There is a sixth son with his previous wife who is in his 50′s, but even less is known about him. It is known that he has a family and no ties to Castro’s regime.

Just because the press can’t report on Castro’s kids doesn’t mean that Cubans aren’t curious about them. The sons all dress casually, but must be accompanied at all times by bodyguards. This, of course, draws suspicious looks everywhere they go.

In 2002, the veil was dropped slightly. Son Antonio’s ex-girlfriend fled Cuba and ended up in Miami with videotaped footage of the Castro family at home. She sold this tape to Miami’s Spanish-language Univision station, which aired segments of it in a special called “The Secret Life Of Fidel Castro.” Although there are rumors about what goes on at the Castro compound, Point Cero, the video shows nothing shocking at all. It contains footage of the intensely private leader and his family sitting down to dinner and not much else.

Since the Cuban leader has been experiencing problems with his health, his sons have become more visible. They have been in the media, making statements regarding their father’s condition. When Castro passes on, many feel that Cuba will open up, and this more open spirit has already been seen in Cuba’s media. Recently, there were television news programs profiling two of his sons, something that never would have happened before.

People and FACTS Magazine assembled and put together a great interesting collection of little known facts about Fidel Castro in a single publication titled “The World’s Biggest Fidel Castro FACTS Collection”. It’s available at: http://www.FidelCastroFacts.com

The elusive leader has always said that a political leader shouldn’t mix his private and public life. Maybe when Castro passes on, we will learn more about his life.
