Poverty in America: Over 35 Million Living Below the Poverty Line

December 22nd, 2010
Ofer Shoshani asked:

The problem of poverty in America comes as a surprise. How can a wealthy nation experience poverty? Though the rate of poverty is lower in a developed nation like America than in Africa, the problem of poverty is real. Inner-cities and rural communities in America are all affected by poverty.

In 2004 the American government defined poverty as a family of four living with an income below $18,810. However, consider the costs in America of housing, utilities, transportation, food, health care, and child care. Even this income seems too small.

The effects of poverty in America are many. Poor nutrition leads to poor health. Poor health makes study and work difficult. Poor education and an inability to work effects income. These problems must be considered alongside other issues: the problem of racism, discrimination against communities, and unequal access to education.

With over thirty-five million living below the poverty line in America, poverty looms as one of the nation’s biggeset problems. It requires huge effort and imagination to begin solving the problem. At its heart, solving the problem of poverty is about the creative cultivation of the talents and dreams of all Americans.

Access to education must be equal for all. Those prospering must bear the burdens of those in need. Everyone must be helped to avoid despair and to hope for change. Everyone must recognize the offensiveness of poverty in a nation like America.

Some organizations have already begun work against poverty in America. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development seeks to transform America into a more caring nation where poverty is an offense against all. The Clemente Course is an education programme for the underpriveleged in America — it offers a humanities education to those unable to attend University on their own.

These organizations can help you begin to explore the problem of poverty in America and to contribute to a solution.

What is a Democrat

December 19th, 2010
Ian Pennington asked:

When it comes to the political parties many individuals choose either Republican or the Democrat side. If you are wondering which side you should choose and you have already read about the Republican Party then you will be happy to know that this article will be telling you all about the Democrat Party.

First we would like to start by telling you that Democrats have been around for a very long time now. In fact, the Democratic Party is known for being around the longest in the United States of America. You see the Democrat Party is pretty big because it just so happens to be one out of two of the major political parties to be found in the United States of America. The other party that follows behind the Democrat Party is known as the Republican Party.

If you try to trace the origins of the Democratic Party then you can trace it back to the Democratic-Republican Party. This party emerged in the year 1792. The Democratic-Republican Party was founded by a number of Federalists such as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. When the division of the Republican Party came out in the year 1912 the Democratic Party has been positioned to the left when it comes to the economic views along with the social matters. Since the year 1932 the one individual that has shaped the Democratic Party the most was Franklin D. Roosevelt. Then in the 1960′s we had the civil rights movement and that seemed to make the Democratic Party stronger.

In the year 2004 the Democrats were more popular than the Republicans. This is because there was seventy two million individuals registered to vote under the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party is currently known to be the majority party when it comes to the 110th Congress. The Democratic Party currently holds the majority when it comes to the House of Representatives along with the Democratic caucus. Also holding the majority when it comes to the state governorships is the Democratic Party. For the year 2008 we have a Democrat running for president and that is Senator Barack Obama. Barack Obama is from Illinois and it looking to be president of the United States of America on the Democrat side.

Have you ever wondered who is the one’s responsible when it comes to promoting the champaign activities on the Democrat side? It is the Democratic National Committee or DNC. Currently the Democratic National Committee is being chaired by Howard Dean and he was the former Governor of Vermont. Have you ever noticed how we are being separated by political parties? The individuals who are Republicans are constantly downing the Democrats while the Democrats are downing the Republicans at the same time.

Public Office is a Public Trust

December 19th, 2010
Frank Desantis asked:

The three words Public, Office and Trust carry great weight and imply sense of duty and moral responsibility. It is always a great privilege to hold an office, more so a public office and to render service honestly and fairly without fear or favor. The greater or higher is the office, the greater is the responsibility. The word office is synonymous with duty, with act of worship.

Once the Emperor of China, gave an official admiration to the officers of his government in remarkable words worth quoting that one who sincerely serves his country leaves fragrance of a good name to a hundred years, he who does not, leave a name that stinks for tens of thousands of years”. Trust and honor go together. He who is honest is always trusted and honored. And when honor is gone, man is dead.

The proposition : ‘Public office is a public trust’ is a worthy maxim, can be used as a touch-stone for judging actions of those who claim to be public servants or who talk high to serve the people, the community and the nation. The higher is the office, the greater is the authority or power derived from the office. Misuse of power or abuse of authority is not only breach of trust but also a public crime and a moral slur.

Territory, population and an organized government are the three essentials of a nation. The government runs the affairs of the state through a well knitted administration. Since earliest times there has been a division of subjects and creation of departments for dealing with the state subjects – the affairs of the state. In every form of government there has been division of subjects and creation and classification of the departments. The people who run the government and manage the departments, must be honest, responsible and dutiful. Then only they can be worthy of trust and real servants of the people.

The word ‘Administer’ has its roots in Latin word: ‘Ad’ and ‘Minister ate’ which means to minister, to manage, to serve. Thus, it implies that an administrator is a public servant. The three organs of the government i.e. the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary are responsible for making of policies and running the administration. In the present context an administrator is educated to realize that administration In a welfare state, is a harmonious combination of men and materials It consists in, proper channelization of available manpower, natural resources and development of human facilities. Administration or running of public office is a collective and not an individual activity.
