5 Quick Ways to Detox Your Home

November 22nd, 2010
Candace Rudd asked:

There are five areas that you can address today to begin living in a healthier, toxin free home.

Air-
We all have different levels of air quality in our homes depending on many factors. Dust, mold, chemicals, cigarette smoke and pesticides are just a few of the extremely toxic substances in our homes today. When possible, open windows to allow these toxins a chance to escape. Indoor airborne chemicals indoors are 70% higher than outside, and we spend 80% of our time indoors.
Therefore, we should be conscious of reducing pollution in our homes. Cleaning frequently removes dust and molds. The use of safer cleaning products which avoid dangerous chemicals is also important.

A good quality air filter or purifier can be used to remove toxins as well. There are numerous types on the market today depending on your needs. The HEPA filter will remove allergens and pollutants from the air. Electrostatic systems have charged plates that do not need to have the filters replaced. There are also UV filters that actually remove microorganisms and mold spores. Activated carbon filters are the most effective in removing odors and chemicals. Prices will vary greatly depending on the type of system and the size needed.

Water-
A water filter or distiller will remove toxins from your water. Again depending on the type, it will determine whether chemicals, metals or microorganisms are removed. The least expensive would be a faucet filter installed directly to the tap. There are whole home filtration systems that are more costly. Also available are countertop distillers which are reasonably priced and are my personal favorite, as they are only as big as a coffee maker.

I would recommend having your water tested to see what your needs are. That can be done at your local health department for a nominal fee. Then research the systems to find the one that best eliminate the toxins you have present.

Food-
Toxins in our food supply are many, but we do have the power to control what we ingest. Eat as many whole foods as possible. Processed foods lose many nutrients and have too many additives. Preservatives and food dyes are extremely toxic and have been linked to ADD in children.

Organic foods are your best choice as they have been shown to have a greater nutrient value. Meats that are not organic contain hormones, chemicals and antibiotics, that weaken our immune systems. Foods are irradiated to give a longer shelf life and appear more attractive. Fresh is best.

Cleaning Supplies-
I believe that these are the number one toxic elements in our homes. Many of the ingredients do not have to be listed on labels as they are, in small quantities “deemed” safe by our government. If used on a regular basis, these chemicals are extremely toxic. Did you know that Lysol is a registered pesticide with the EPA? It is the number one carcinogen in our homes. Bleach is a neurotoxin, which damages nerve tissue and may cause debilitating disease.

These products are not necessary for keeping our homes clean and cause so much damage. This is just two of the hundreds of chemicals many households are exposed to daily. With airtight insulated homes this poses a dangerous problem. Fresh air rarely gets in and toxins never escape.

Also chemicals used in carpets, particle board and cabinets, contain formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. Not to mention we are poisoning our environment with the use of these chemicals.

Once again open windows when you can and choose safer, nontoxic cleaning products.

Cleanse-
There are many forms of body detox cleansing. They range from simple herbs that remove toxins from your system, to full fasts and cleanses. I recommend the latter be done under professional supervision. Some juice detox plans done twice a year are very effective. These consist of fresh fruit and vegetable juices for a period of 3-5 days. It’s amazing the difference you will feel, having more vitality and energy. Breathing and sleeping better will also be evident, as accumulated toxins are released from your body.

There are many books and guides on how to do this. I recommend “The Detox Strategy”, by Brenda Watson.

Dr Elson Haas has numerous helpful books as well.

With toxic exposure from our air, water, food and cleaning products, we are setting ourselves up for disease. You can easily replace all areas with a safe alternative, aren’t you and your family worth it?

Start in one area today and watch your conscious grow and spread to every area of your daily life.

The End of Organic Farming? How HR875 Could Kill the Farmers Market

November 19th, 2010
Jon Whitehead asked:

The US has several organizations which are responsible for the safety of food products including the USDA, the FDA,the CDC and the EPA. As is typical with most agencies they are underfunded, understaffed and don’t communicate with each other.

Recent food poisoning outbreaks have shone a light into the world of food inspections and public safety. The plant responsible for the peanut butter recall did not even have a state health department permit, a fact which went unnoticed during the 3 inspections by the USDA certified Texas Department of Agriculture.

Peanuts, Jalapenos, Spinach, Beef, Tomatoes. The list goes on and on. The answer for some appears to be HR875 which is a bill currently being rushed through congress. Also known as the Food Safety Modernization Bill of 2009 it effectively creates a new agency with extensive powers to enforce federal guidelines taking away the power from individual states. It’s reach is seemingly limitless affecting small farmers and producers through its new definition of food production facilities which can be applied to almost anything including your back yard vegetable garden.

By standardizing food production procedures to factory farming methods they will automatically force out smaller organic producers who are not able either financially or morally to comply. This will leave the public no options as to how they choose their meat, dairy, produce etc.

So who stands to benefit from this bill ? Probably the Monsantos, Tysons and Cargills of this world who probably had more than a helping hand in its creation. What could be more standardized than genetically modified food? Designer seeds with designer pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers? Patented animals? The possible financial rewards for these companies is hard to even imagine. In 2007 Monsanto had over $1B in sales of Posilac the only rGBH product allowed in the US by the FDA but banned in Canada and Europe. The failure of our food agencies is obvious. We allow additives and adulterants in our food that means we are unable to sell our products abroad yet we are about to punish the only people who still grow their food the way nature intended it.

Finding an Approved Kitchen For a Catering Business

November 14th, 2010
Richard Calvin Myers asked:

It is true that in order to have an approved kitchen for the catering service the kitchen cannot be a home one and it needs to be approved. An approved kitchen inspected by the state health department or even the local health departments. Which agency inspects depends on a whole lot of things and that’s a very different issue altogether.

There is usually a kitchen manager who needs to be there and the types of food that can be prepared in the kitchen will of course depend on the equipments that are available in the kitchen. Training on the use of such equipments, cleaning and waste disposal, and storage of finished products – all of this is to be taken under consideration before writing any agreement.

The certified food handler needs to be employed and he need not be present on the site at the time of food production. But he is the one who would be responsible for all the food that is prepared in the kitchen. If none of the employers are certified then the service needs to be certified at least.

The cooks and employees need to be clearly aware of food service sanitation especially when it comes to the storage of finished or prepared food. And this knowledge affects the decision of the health department in order to approve the kitchen.

Certain food items always have specific regulations and therefore if the kitchen is going to prepare those kinds of food in particular then these precise regulations should be known by the workers.

One very important thing to remember is regarding allergens. Some people have severe allergies caused by certain food items. This can lead to serious illness or even to death. Usually allergies are related to certain natural proteins in food. These allergens cause abnormal reaction of the immune system of the body and can easily lead to respiratory problem. Therefore the food producers need to make sure that all the ingredients of the food are clearly known to them and then the guests are to be informed of it. It is to be made sure that there is no cross contamination that takes place during the preparation of the food items. The items that mainly cause allergic reactions in people are peanuts, Soya beans, eggs, fish, milk, walnuts, wheat, crustacean shellfish etc. so when these items are prepared they need to be declared to the guests.

All the employees are to be reminded that while at work they have a legal duty to take reasonable care of the health and safety of themselves, their colleagues and others with whom they come in contact as well as the guests they are to serve. They ought to co-operate with their employer in complying with health and safety requirements.

Proper hygiene is to be maintained in the kitchen. When the place is inspected and the main chef is probably interviewed the health department will check the knowledge on proper hygiene before approving the kitchen. These are the most important facts to remember in order to get the service kitchen approved.

Replacement Birth Certificates – How to Get a Copy of Your Lost, Stolen or Misplaced Birth Records

November 14th, 2010
Kalvin Hobbs asked:

The US Census Bureau reports that they regularly get requests for birth certificate from citizens who do not know that getting their birth records can be a lot closer to home, such as their own state, or even their own community.

However, there is no centralized federal repository of birth records in the United States. Instead, each state maintains its own records either at the state Health Department or Bureau of Vital Statistics (often a division of the Health Department).

Occasionally the county or town where you were born might have a copy of your birth certificate, but not all do. However, if you are in your mid-70s or older, you might find that’s the only place they do exist as a number of state records go back only until the early 1900s.

This can be a Catch-22 for the elderly, particularly those from rural areas. Local records have been lost due to fires, floods, and other natural disasters. Sometimes the only record is a listing in a family Bible. (However, such family records have been accepted in some cases where the loss of official records is documented.)

Occasionally people think that a copy of their birth certificate is kept at the hospital where they were born and they can get a replacement copy there. That is not accurate. While the hospital records may include a record of your birth (and if you’re middle-aged, the less likely this is, or at least the less likely it is that anyone could find the record), hospitals cannot issue you a replacement birth certificate.

Issuing a replacement birth certificate needs to be done by the state record center responsible for maintaining birth records in the state where you were born (unless, for previously mentioned reasons, that’s impossible. Talk to your state record center about what to do in that situation.)

Requesting a copy of your birth certificate requires that you submit a request in writing with your full birth name, birth date, place of date and, when possible, your parents’ first and last names (including your mother’s maiden name). You also need to say that the birth certificate is for you, as birth certificates will only be issued to the person, their spouse, parents, grandparents, siblings, and/or legal guardians.

Official birth certificate replacement forms may require additional information, but a letter explaining what you want and providing the information generally is sufficient. You also need to include the appropriate fee.
